To work as a mutual fund distributor in India, you first need to pass NISM Series V-A — Mutual Fund Distributors. This exam shows you have a working understanding of mutual funds, and you need the certificate to apply for your AMFI Registration Number (ARN). The registration process itself is simple. Still, many first-timers get stuck on small details like OTP verification, GST status or picking a test slot.
This guide covers each step: creating your NISM account, enrolling for the V-A exam, paying the fee, downloading your admit card and collecting your certificate.
At a glance: Register on the NISM certification portal → complete your profile (photo, PAN, address proof, education, occupation) → enrol for Series V-A → choose your city, test centre, date and time slot → enter GST/billing details → pay online → download your admit card.
If you’re still deciding whether V-A is the right exam for you, read our overview of the NISM V-A Mutual Fund Distributor exam: eligibility, syllabus, fees and career scope first.
Before you start: keep these documents ready
The NISM profile form asks for several uploads and details. Keep everything in one folder before you begin so you don’t have to stop halfway through.
- Scanned copy of your PAN card: clear and readable
- Recent photograph: passport-size, plain background
- Address proof: Aadhaar, passport, driving licence or a similar document
- Educational qualification details: highest qualification, major subject, institute or university, year of passing and grade
- Employment details: organisation name, designation, address and total work experience (if you are employed or self-employed)
- A valid email ID and an active mobile number
Key fact: Use an email address you check regularly. NISM sends your certificate and important communication to the email ID registered on your account.
Part 1: Create your NISM account
Go to the official NISM certification portal and register for a new account. Then complete your profile in this order.
Step 1: Set up login credentials
Enter your email address and choose a password. This becomes your permanent login for all NISM exams, so pick a password you’ll remember. You’ll need the same account later for V-B, VIII, X-A or any other series.
Step 2: Upload photo, PAN and address proof
Upload your photograph and the soft copy of your PAN card. Then choose which document you’re submitting as proof of address and upload it.
Step 3: Fill in personal details
Enter your name, father’s name, date of birth and an alternate email ID. Click Next.
Exam tip: Make sure your name matches your PAN card exactly. A mismatch between your NISM certificate and your PAN can cause problems later when you apply for your ARN.
Step 4: Add and verify contact details
Enter your full address and phone number. NISM sends an OTP to your mobile, and you must verify it before you can move on. Click Next once it’s verified.
Step 5: Educational qualification
Select your highest qualification and fill in your major subject, institute or university name, year of graduation and grade.
Step 6: Professional qualifications
If you hold professional qualifications such as CA, CFA, CS or MBA, select the ones that apply. If you don’t have any, just click Next. This field is optional.
Step 7: Occupation and work experience
Choose one of three options:
- Employed: enter the organisation name, your designation, the address and other details
- Self-employed: enter the organisation name, date of commencement and address
- Unemployed: no extra details needed
Then select your total work experience.
Step 8: Review and submit
Check every field carefully. Tick the declaration box confirming that all the information is correct, then submit. Your NISM account is now created.
Part 2: Enrol for the NISM V-A exam
Creating an account doesn’t book your exam. Enrolment is a separate step.
- Log in to your NISM account.
- Click Enrol on the dashboard.
- Select the examination type and the certificate you’re enrolling for. Here, that’s NISM Series V-A: Mutual Fund Distributors.
- Choose your payment method for the exam.
- Select your city and the nearest available test centre.
- Pick the exam dates that suit you.
- Choose a time slot from the ones available on your chosen dates.
Exam tip: Book a date that gives you at least 4–6 weeks of preparation, and choose a morning slot if you think best early in the day. Popular centres in metro cities fill up quickly near month-end, so book early.
Part 3: GST, billing and payment
GST details
- If you’re GST-registered (common for self-employed distributors running a firm), enter your GST registration details so you get a proper tax invoice.
- If you’re not GST-registered, select Unregistered and tick Same as profile address.
Billing address
Check the billing address section and click Next.
Payment
Choose your payment gateway, select your preferred method (UPI, net banking, debit or credit card) and complete the transaction. The V-A exam fee is ₹1,500 plus GST. Always confirm the current fee on the NISM portal before paying.
Once the payment goes through, a confirmation pop-up shows that you’ve enrolled for the NISM V-A exam. Keep the payment summary in case you need it later.
Part 4: Download your admit card
The admit card appears in the upper-right corner of the payment summary page, with an option to download it. Save a PDF copy and print it.
Go back to the dashboard to see your enrolment details. From there you can:
- Track the status of your enrolment
- Reschedule your exam if your plans change
On exam day: what to carry
You need two things at the test centre:
- Your admit card (printed)
- One original photo ID proof: PAN card, Aadhaar card, driving licence or passport
Key fact: Photocopies and digital IDs on your phone are generally not accepted as a replacement for the original. Carry the physical document.
Preparing between registration and exam day
Once your slot is booked, you have a firm deadline. NISM offers study material, practice exams and mock tests on its website. Read the official workbook at least once, because exam questions often follow its wording closely.
Then practise with timed, full-length mocks. Our NISM V-A mock test with 30 recent exam questions explained is a good place to start. For a week-by-week plan, see how to pass NISM V-A on your first try.
After you pass: getting your certificate and ARN
Once you clear the exam:
- Log in to the NISM portal and go to My Enrolments → Completed.
- Download your NISM V-A certificate.
- Use the certificate to apply for your ARN through the AMFI website.
With your ARN in hand, you can empanel with AMCs and start distributing mutual funds. Your V-A certificate is valid for 3 years. To keep it valid, you’ll need to renew it through CPE or by retaking the exam before it expires.
Common registration mistakes to avoid
- Using a temporary or office email that you might lose access to later
- Name mismatch between your NISM profile and your PAN card
- Uploading blurry scans of your PAN or address proof
- Booking a slot too soon, before you’ve finished at least two or three full mocks
- Forgetting the original photo ID on exam day
